Welcome to the White Pine Stampede

Jack McKaig

White Pine Stampede still on for Feb. 2

Many Antrim County residents were saddened to hear of the death of John “Jack” McKaig in June. Although Jack owned a law firm in Mancelona for decades, it was as Race Director of the White Pine Stampede that he was most universally known. So, it is no surprise that the shock of his passing was quickly followed by a question: Is the White Pine Stampede going to continue to run?

The remaining members of the White Pine Stampede committee answered that question this summer with a resounding, Yes! Beth McKaig, Jack’s wife, will fill in as Race Director with the help of the rest of the committee, and major sponsors, Shanty Creek Resorts and Short’s Brewing Company, will continue their support as well.

“We decided we cannot let this race die,” Beth McKaig said. “Jack committed over 40 years of his life to this race, and he was most proud of how it brought the communities of Mancelona and Bellaire together, so we are going to do our best to carry it on.”

Of course, Beth added, the volunteers for the event are the true reason for the 42 years of success the race has enjoyed, and the WPS committee will be depending on them more than ever this year.

“We hope people continue to come out and support the race as volunteers, racers, and sponsors,” Beth said.

In the past, there have been three race events--a 50K, 26K, and 10K-- held on the first Saturday in February. Registration forms will be sent out soon to previous race participants, or they can be picked up at the Mancelona Law office.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering for the event or obtaining more information may contact the race Secretary, Rebecca Kendall at (231) 587-8812.

"We've lost our leader. The heart of this Race.

Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the man that brought so many people, from so many places, together through this race. He appreciated everyone, Skiers, volunteers, and spectators alike. As his daughter Heather has said "Love is not a big enough word for how [Jack] felt about this race."
In the past several days, so many fond memories of Jack and this race have been shared. We're sure he has been able to enjoy hearing them from that great 50k finish line in the sky.

Thank you for your kind words during this time."
